Photo Blog

Portfolios are great, but a story is in the sequence of images. In between the weddings and family shoots I post here, I'll toss in some photographer's thoughts about equipment, software and industry. Please add your email to my blog list to receive updates when I add new content- never more than one update email per week. Thanks!

Nick and Kelsey Fall Engagements

Engagement sessions should be more than a collection of poses and a pleasant background. When we go out to photograph a couple prior to their wedding, we use this opportunity to capture their personalities and strong emotional connection. If possible, we integrate locations that are important and meaningful which lends to more relaxed and natural shots. Kelsey and Nick are both fond of Seattle and skilled pilots so we broke their session into two parts. For the first part, we started at Pike Place Market and flowed into the surrounding areas including a nearby park that was almost pure yellow from Fall leaves. We ended this first part at the International Fountain in Seattle Center.

A week later, I met with them again to include their love for planes.

Karie and Brad Seattle Center Engagement Session

The Seattle Center is an amazing space complete with the Experience Music Project (Seattlites call it the EMP) and the famous Space Needle. Other nice attractions are the monorail built back in the 60's for the World's Fair and the International Fountain which is programmed to perform water aerobics to music. We started our session at McCaw Hall which has a cool surface fountain that gradually sloped down. I asked Karie and Brad to take a stroll in the water and they even took their pug in with them for some shots. To the south, we spent some time at the International Fountain then on to the EMP for shots of the vibrant pink/red/orange metallic skin of the building.
